Short Arabic Phrases of Daily Use

BIS MIL LAA

In the name of Allah
Every affair of a Muslim is begun with these words. The object is to remind one of the need to seek the help of Allah in all affairs. This is a shortened form of the full formula which is as follows :

  

BIS MIL LAA HIR RAH MAA NIR RA HEEM
In The name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

AL GHAMDU LIL LAA

 All praise is due to Allah
These words are generally uttered as a kind of thanksgiving to Allah when any good comes to one. Even the sneezer is required to thank Allah in these words when he sneezes. It is with these words that the first chapter of the Holy Quran opens.

  

 ALLAHU AKBAR

Allah is the Greatest
These ords are known as Takbir and are uttered whenever a person has to give expression to his own insignificance or to the insignificance of all creation before Divine grandeur. These words also form a kind of battle-cry of a Muslim and indicates that he is not overawed by the numbers of forces opposing him.


SUBHA-NALLAH

 Glory be to Allah / Allah is free from imperfections
These words are used when a man has to give expression to the fact that he is not free from expressions or that he has made an error. They are also used when a person sees another making a mistake.


ASTAGH FI RULLAH

I seek the protection of Allah
This is a prayer to which one should resort as often as possible, and the words are also used when one sees a thing which he would avoid. It is known as ISTIGHFAR which means the seeking of Divine protection from the commission of sin as well as from the punishment of sin when it has een committed, and the more often a man resorts to it, the farther away he is from the liability of falling into sin. The fuller form of ISTIGHFAR is as follows :

ASTAGHFIRULLAHA RABBI MIN KULLI DHANBIN WA ATOOBU ILAIH

I seek the protection of Allah from every fault and I turn to Him

  

  

LA HAULA WA LAA QUWATTA ILLA BIL-LAA

There is no strength nor power but in Allah
These words indicate that a person has neither the strength to turn away from what is evil nor the power to adopt the course of good unless Allah gives him such strength or power and they are used to give expression to reliance on Allah in all matters


MA SHA ALLAH

It is as Allah has pleased
When one feels adminration for a person or a thing, he uses these words as a showing that all good comes from Allah.


 

HASBIYAL-LAH 

May Allah suffice me


HASBUNAL-LAH

May Allah suffice us

These words are used to show that it is Allah alone Who saves man from stumbling and from all kinds of errors and afflictions.

ASSALAMU ALAYKUM

 Peace be on you


 WA ALAY KUMUS SALAAM

 And on you be peace

This first form is that in which one Muslim greets his brother, and the secnd is that in which the greeting is returned. The enlarged form is as follows :

ASSALAMU ALYKUM WARAHMATULLAHI WABARAKATUH

 Peace be on you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings

  

WA ALAYKU MUS SALAAMU WARAHMATULLAHI WABARAKATUH

 And on you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings


JAZA KAL-LAH

May Allah reward thee


 JAZA KUMUL LAAHU KHAIRA

May Allah give you a goodly reward.When a Muslim receives a gift from another or when he receives any good, he thanks the bestower of the gift or the bestower of good in either of these forms.

  

BARA-KAL-LAH

May Allah bless you
When a person sees any good in his brother, he addresses him in these words, meaning that good may be granted to him in a greater measure and that it may never be cut off.

YAR GHAMU KAL LAH

May Allah have mercy on thee
In these words a Muslim prays for his brother when he sees him in distress
