Belief (Emaan) Guide

E-mail Print PDF

Islam consist of five pillars (arkaan). The first pillar is to have faith (Emaan) by testifying that there is no true god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the final messenger of Allah.
Emaan means to believe firmly without any shadow of doubt, to have faith, to be contented, to accept and to be pleased with all that which the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) came with and told us. The person who firmly believes is called a Mu’min (a believer).

The Arkaan of Emaan are six, viz.
1. To believe in Allah.
2. To believe in His Angels
3. To believe in His Books
4. To believe in His Prophets
5. To believe in the Last Day.
6. To believe that both good and evil has been ordained by Allah.

In this edition we focus on two of these arkaan, viz. belief in Allah, and belief in His Books.

Belief in Allah
In the previous edition we dealt with the attributes of Allah (swt), viz. the 20 Sifaat as well as the Asmaa-ul-Ghusnaa, the 99 names of Allah (swt). We now focus on the Kalimah (declaration of faith). There are seven Kalimahs that a Muslim must learn, know and recite at all times because they bring us nearer to Allah, strengthen our faith, and imprint and imbue in us peace of mind, tranquility and happiness

BELIEF IN THE REVEALED BOOKS

It is incumbent that we believe that Allah (swt) revealed books (kitaabs) to various prophets, and that these books are the eternal Holy words of Allah (swt). We do not know the exact number of these holy books, but it is essential that we know the names of the four that are mentioned in the Quran, and they are the Tauraah, the Zaboor, the Injeel and the Quran.

TAURAAH
Also known as the Old Testament, this Holy Book was revealed to Nabi Moosa (pbuh).
????? ??????????? ???????????? ??????? ????? ??? ??????
Lo! We did reveal the Tauraah, wherein is guidance and a light.
(5: 44)

ZABOOR
Also known as the Psalms of David. This is the Holy Book that was revealed to Nabi Dawood (pbuh).
?? ???????? ??????? ?????????
And We imparted unto Dawood the Zaboor (Psalms).
(4: 163)

INJEEL
Also known as the New Testament. This is the Holy Books revelaed to Nabi ‘Esaa (pbuh).
?? ?????????? ????????? ????? ???????? ??????????? ?????????????.
And We caused ‘Isaa, son of Maryam, to follow and gave him the Gospel (Injeel).
(57: 27)

Thus Muslims came to know from the Qur’an that these three books came from Allah.
A person who does not accept the Tauraah, Zaboor and Injeel as Allah’s books is kaafir because these books have been proven to be Divine on the authority of the Holy Qur’an. And one who does not believe in what the Holy Qur’an says is a kaafir.

Are the Tauraah, Zaboor and Injeel, which the Jews, Christians and others have today, the original heavenly books? It has been made clear in the Qur’an that these books, the Tauraah, Zaboor and Injeel have been changed and altered by the people. So the present books are not the original Tawraah, Zaboor and Injeel, as revealed by Allah (swt).

Differences between the Quran and these Divine Books
1. The Holy Qur’an has been kept without the change of even a single word- there will not be any change in it till the Qiyaamah. In other previous Divine Books, people have made great alterations.
2 The text of the Qur’an is miraculous and is of such a high literary standard that even its smallest surah or verse cannot be matched.
3. The Holy Qur’an brought the last and final Commands of Allah and cancelled many Commands of the previous Books.
4. The previous Books came all at once. The Holy Qur’an took 23 years to complete and it came in parts as and when it was needed. This gradual revelation won it a place in the hearts of men. Hundreds and thousands of people accepted its orders and embraced Islam.
5. The Holy Qur’an has been learnt by heart, thus it is safe in the memory of millions of Muslims. This practice continues to this day since the time of the Prophet (pbuh) and Allah-willing it will continue till the Qiyaamah. This way prevented the enemies of Islam from making changes or adding or taking out anything from the book or destroying it. Allah-willing, these people will not be able to do so up till the Qiyaamah.
6. The Commands of the Qur’an are so moderate and easy that they suit all people at all times. There are not any people in the world who feel difficulty in adopting the orders of the Holy Qur’an. Since these principles suit all times and all people, there is no need for a new Shari’ah or a new heavenly Book. The Prophethood of our beloved Prophet (pbuh) was meant to be for the whole world and mankind up till the Day of Judgment.
