What is Qurbaan
Qurbaan is a sacrifice that is offered at the time of Eid al-Adha to show gratitude towards Allah (swt) and to provide for the poor and needy. The Prophet Muhammad (saws) was once asked by his Companions: "O Prophet of Allah! What is this qurbani?" He replied, "It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim (as)." (Hadith - Ibn Majah).
Allah (swt) says in the Qur'an: "It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him." (Qur'an 22:37). Qurbaan has been performed from the time of Ibrahim (AS) and commemorates also Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, who was replaced by an animal at the time of sacrifice.
On Whom is Qurbaan Wajib
Qurbaan is wajib on every Muslim who is of sound mind, mature (who has reached the age of puberty). Qurbani is not incumbent on a child or an insane person whether they own wealth or not, nor is it wajib upon their guardians to perform it on their behalf.
It is highly virtuous for one on whom Qurbaan is not wajib to offer sacrifice for the Pleasure of Allah.
Days of Qurbaan
The days of Qurbaan are the tenth, eleventh and twelfth of Dhul Hijjah. The first day is better than the second, and the second better than the last.
Time for Qurbaan
In towns and cities where jumu'ah and 'Eid are performed, Qurbaan is not permissible before the 'Eid Salaah. If the Qurbaan has been offered before the 'Eid Salaah, it will have to be repeated. Therefore, the time for Qurbaan commences after 'Eid Salaah on 1Oth Dhull Hijjah until before sunset of 12th Dhul Hijjah. It is permissible, but not preferable to perform Qurbaan at night.
