Al Hamdu Lillaahi Rabbil 'Aalameen was Salaatu was
Salaamu 'alaa Ashrafil Anbiyaa'e wal Mursaleen

Wa Ba'd:

"And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief
in the earth, they say, we are peace-makers only.
Are they not indeed the mischief makers?"
[Surah Al-Baqara verses 11 and 12].

O Ummatul Muslimeen! What is hypocrisy? Hypocrisy is without any question of a doubt a most detestable and vile quality that a human being can possess. It is in the nature of a human being to accept and strive to attain happiness, contentment and freedom. In so doing a human being can upgrade himself or herself to the highest degree of dignity. However, when a human being becomes polluted with lying, violation of promises and breaking agreements, hypocrisy finds itself a wide arena and is then ready to penetrate such polluted natures. Hypocrisy advances in these circumstances until it eventually becomes an acute disease for Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala informs us in verse 1 of Surah Al-Munafiqun:

"And Allah bears witness that the
Hypocrites are indeed deceitful."

People of Imaan! The special feature here deals with the wiles and mischief of the hypocrite element in any community, and the need of guarding against the temptation it throws in the way of Believers. Hypocrites only seek selfish ends. The oaths of Hypocrites are a screen for their misdeeds. They think they deceive with their fair exteriors and plausible talk, but their minds are impervious to the real Truth. They may plot to withhold from men of Allah such things of this world as they may command; they may plot to expel and persecute the righteous; they may call them ill names and slight them. But to Almighty Allah Rabbul Ala'meen belongs the treasures of the heavens and the earth, and He will bestow according to His Wise and universal Plan.

O you who Believe! Hypocrisy not only prevents individuals from reaching the Truth or even attempting to discover it, but it also becomes an indestructible dam placed on the path of acquiring noble characteristics. Hypocrisy is a most dangerous epidemic which threatens our honour and dignity, leads to irresponsibility and lowly traits, and replaces our self-confidence with suspicion, pessimism and anxiety. Those who reach the dangerous point in their behavioral misconduct convince themselves that they want the best for everyone. Hypocrites are more dangerous than arch-enemies. Almighty Allah Jallah Wa'ala has cursed them in verse 68 of Surah Al-Tawbah:

"Allah hath promised the Hypocrites men and women,
and the rejecters of Faith, the fire of Hell; therein shall
they dwell: Sufficient is it for them: For them is the
Curse of Allah, and an enduring punishment - ."

Alal Muslimeena Jami'ah! Because a hypocrite is unable to win the hearts of those he or she deals with or gain love and respect, his or her life is full of humiliation and disgust. All attempts to conceal the facts prevents a hypocrite from living a secure, stable, and anxiety free life. A hypocrite is in constant fear of the inevitable discovery of what he or she really is. If hypocrisy penetrates the structure of a community and overwhelms the hearts of its members, then in addition to the deceit and lowliness which becomes apparent among them; such a community is doomed. A hypocritical person does not have a group he or she can rely on, therefore a hypocrite lives a life of confusion. Our Beloved Nabee Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam described hypocrisy and also revealed to us three signs of a hypocrite:

"A hypocrite is like a sheep confused between two herds.
And there are three signs of hypocrites: When they speak
they lie. When they make promises they do not keep them.
And when they are trusted they cheat."

Ummatal Qur'an! Hypocrisy is an incurable spiritual disease. A hypocrite argues for no reason except to seek name and fame and to become famous. A hypocrite is not sure about his or her beliefs and do not really believe in what he or she argues about, yet a hypocrite would rather criticize others instead of remaining silent as it is difficult for a hypocrite to tolerate others indifference to him or her. Another type of people are those that when they notice people's indifference to them, follow the path of hypocrisy to create dissention and hence prove their existence. It is said that the words of a hypocrite are beautiful and his or her inner [conscience] is ill. The hypocrite is a flatterer of himself and herself, and a defamer of other people as we are told in verse 4 of Surah Al-Munafiqun:

"When thou look at them, their exteriors please thee;
And when they speak, thou listen to their words. They are
as (worthless as hollow) pieces of timber propped up,
(Unable to stand on their own).

They think that every cry
is against them. They are the enemies; so beware of them.
The Curse of Allah be on them! How are they deluded (away
from the Truth)."

Ya Bani Adam! The tongue of a hypocrite contradicts the heart, the heart contradicts his or her conduct, and his or her appearance contradicts his or her inner beliefs.  People who attempt to conceal what is in their hearts beneath hypocrisy and flattery will never be successful, for their reality and the truth will eventually be revealed. If you really think you can introduce yourself with words then you have deceived yourselves. Because others will not judge you by the norms you wish to assign. Rather they will know you by your actions, words, conditions, conscience, and your inner self.

Ayyuhal Muslimeen! The people who you talk to will notice the strengths and weaknesses of your ideas, your hypocrisy and reality from your speech and even from your silence. The people around you will discover your hopes and intentions, and then form their opinions about you; even if you object to some of their views about you, they will be unwilling to change them. Sometimes we hear people say: "I can't stand to look at a specific person." These individuals can not tolerate the hated one's, even though they may have some praiseworthy traits or a pleasant appearance.

Ya Ibad Allah! People who feel this way do so because they have read the thoughts and feelings of others. We also feel that way about some people. This is the effect of thoughts. All our thoughts and feelings spread around us and others sense them with the rays of their thought. We must and should for always remember: "Healthy consciences have more truthful testimonies than eloquent tongues."

Ayyuhal Muh'minoon! When we intend to fight an undesirable habit we must first recognize its evil results. Then we should acknowledge the habit and finally reflect on the incidents which make us victims of such a habit. If we acquaint ourselves with the stages of this habit, we will become triumphant over the inspiration of that habit by feeling the great joy of eradicating it. In order for us to bring our souls out of the darkness into light, we must strengthen all noble thoughts in our minds to counter any destructive ideas or inspirations. By guarding our tongues against hypocrisy and slander, we take the first bold step towards happiness.

O you who believe! In order to develop good traits, we must observe ourselves and maintain pure intentions. It is imperative that we start with ourselves, so that we can Insha'Allah obtain appropriate grounds for our happiness and the happiness of our society in all fields. When we say hypocrisy, we mean it in a broader sense than just ideological, behavioral, moral, or verbal hypocrisy, for Islam - the Din of Haqq has summoned all its adherents to a total and comprehensive unity, so as to lead them to a sincere life free of hypocrisy, dissention, Fithnah and treachery.

And Almighty Allah knows best.
The Truth is from Almighty Allah
- the errors are all mine and I stand to be corrected.

Baarak Allaahu Feekum wa-sal Allaahu wa-Sallam 'alaa
Nabiyyinaa Muhammad Sallallahoo Alayhi Wasallam.

Was Salamualaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu.
