The 500 Most Influential Muslims for 2009 was released earlier this month and although the list has attracted many criticisms   worldwide about the hierarchy and content, the piece below focuses rather on the profiles of the South Africans. The Holy Quran in Surah 3 Verse 104, states: “Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong: they are the ones to attain felicity.” Congratulations to these individuals and may from amongst us indeed rise honourable leaders and contributors of tomorrow. Hashim Amla is the first South African of Indian descent to reach the national squad. His requests to have logos promoting alcohol removed from his playing gear have been successful. His elevation to the South Africa side was a poorly kept secret after he reeled off four centuries in his first eight innings of the 2004-05 season, after being appointed captain of the Dolphins (formerly Natal) at the tender age of 21.

Personal FINANCE made easy – The Islamic Way

Hajj is the most sacred journey any Muslim undertakes. It is one that most people save all their lives for and spend a lifetime preparing for, but beyond saving for hajj, most hujjaaj give hardly a thought to budgeting for the day to day expenses of this trip and learn this painfully by trial and error. This article hopes to give greater insight into your hajj finances with perhaps a useful tip or two worth remembering. Hajj Classes. While hajj is spiritual journey, it relies on something very material to get us there – money! Therefore, a fair bit of common sense and logic is called for right from the outset, added to the spiritual preparation. Regrettably far too few of our hajj classes consider this. They need to be encouraged to call in the experts to provide prospective hujjaaj – many of whom have never travelled before in their lives – with basic travel advice that will prepare them for the journey, as well as sound financial tips that will help sustain them

Sheikh Ahmad Hendricks

Tasawwuf is a crucial aspect of our Deen and I am privileged to have this opportunity to share my insights and understandings of it, small as it may be, with you the reader. It is common in our time to hear people complaining about a lack of meaning in their lives. Everywhere people are looking for “something” to overcome this inner vacuum. A powerful need is felt to restore the imbalances which usually accompanies the relentless pursuit to satisfy material needs. Now what has all of this to do with Tasawwuf you might as well ask.

The truth is Tasawwuf, or the lack of it, has everything to do with this crisis. Tasawwuf is the life blood of this Din. It runs through our bodies. Loss of blood, as it happens when someone is seriously injured, will lead to the death of the body.

This point is easily grasped if you bear in mind the following comments.

The Din comprises of three distinct aspects. This is clearly indicated by the answer of the Nabi, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, to the questions put to him by the Archangel Jibril. ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him,

SABR (Patience)

There are numerous examples in the Quran and Sunnah that emphasise the importance of sabr – but few bring it home clearly than the following Surah (113:1-30):
“By the token of time through the ages, verily man is in loss, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of truth, and of patience and constancy.’

In the context of its usage in the Quran the word sabr has numerous implications, for example, it implies thoroughness without being hasty; patient perseverance; firmness of purpose; and a cheerful attitude of resignation and understanding in sorrow, defeat or suffering. The aforementioned implications are those which are applicable in the context of this article.
Thus sabr would mean to have patient perseverance when wishing to achieve something; to strive your best in your endeavours; and accepting situations when such achievement is not possible.

Focus on Refugees

The shameful xenophobia displayed by South Africans towards their brothers and sisters from the rest of the continent is food for serious thought and action. Despite the wonderful outpouring of assistance from all sectors of the city’s population, the danger of a recurrence of this phenomenon is ever-present, provided remedial measures are instituted. While most of these measures lie within the realm of government responsibilities, viz. poverty alleviation, housing, immigration and job creation, civil society needs to play its part by moving away from the ‘us’ and ‘them’ divide and familiarizing themselves properly with those literally on their doorsteps. By understanding the history, culture and customs of others, a more tolerant, compassionate and integrated society can be developed.

Thus we are embarking on a journey through Africa to equip our readers with the salient features of each country. In addition, we want to empower readers by making an encounter with a refugee more than a handout - for restoring the dignity of a human being is one the highest forms of Ibaadah. We start this series with the country of Somalia, situated in the Horn of Africa and in
