The Friday Congregational Service or Jumu’ah is a personal obligation (Fard Ain) on every responsible free male in residence who has no excuse by reason of illness or any other legitimate excuse for not attending. Jumu’ah can be conducted and becomes valid only through the attendance of such people. Though the attendance of women at Jumu’ah is not obligatory, they should, however, generally attend so far as is consistent with their duties. The basis for the obligation of Jumu’ah is the Divine injunction: O ye who believe! When the call is heard for the prayer of the day of congregation, hasten unto remembrance of Allah and leave trading. That is better for you, if ye did but know. (62:9). The above verse contains an express commandment to all Muslims to leave off trade and business of every kind as soon as the first Call to prayer is heard and to hasten to¬wards the mosque for the

Congregational service.

Tariq bin Shihab reported that the Messenger of Allah said: "Jumu’ah is a duty binding upon every Muslim in congregation except upon four: slave, woman, boy or sick man." Omitting the Friday Service without good reason is consi¬dered a grave sin. Abu Ja'd reported that the Prophet said: "Whoever omits three Friday services making light of it, Allah will set a seal on his heart."

The Salaah of the Traveller

1. SALAAH IN THE USUAL MANNER as it is performed at home with the SUNNAH parts at the appointed times (Awqaat).

Allah. says in the Holy Quran:

“When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if you shorten your prayers" (4:101). On the basis of the above verse permission is granted for a traveller to shorten the obligatory part of SALAAH during a journey once he passes beyond the town's homesteads or boundary by reducing the four RAK'AHS of DHUHR, ASR and ISHAA to two RAK'AHS. This reduction of theprayer -services is known as QASR SALAAH or SHORTENED

Prayer Guide

Sunnah and Nafl prayers are acts of worship that are not obligatory which the Holy Prophet performed either regularly or occasionally. There are different categories of optional salaah, viz.

Sunnatu Mu’akkadah – prayers that the Holy Prophet observed regularly and strongly encouraged his followers to do likewise.

Sunnatu Ghair-il-Mu’akkadah – prayers that the Holy Prophet did not perform regularly and may therefore be offered at our discretion. The Sunnah prayers linked to the 5 fard salaah are called Raatibah Prayers of which 10 raka’ahs are Mu’akkadah, and 12 are Ghair-il-Ma’akaddah. Nafl prayers are optional prayers for which no particular time, place nor purpose is prescribed.

It may be offered at all times except at the prohibited times for salaah. It is permissible to offer even one rak'ah of this salaah in the usual manner, reciting Tashahhud (attahiyaat) at the endand pronouncing Salaam. When a worshipper desires to offer more than one rak'ah, it is sunnah to recite Tashahhud and to pronounce Salaam at the end of every two rak'ahs.

Described below are two highly recommended Sunnah Salaah.

The Virtues of Tahmeed, Tahleel, and Tasbeeh

Tahmeed is to say 'Al-hamdu lillãhi

Tahleel is to say Lã 'ilãha 'illã 'allãhu
