Palestine is the home of the olive tree, with some of the oldest olive groves in the world, some dating as far back as 1500 to 2000 years. The olive trees produce fruit that supports over half the population and can be seen dominating the agricultural landscape.

The Mediterranean climate, rich fertile soil and use of organic traditional farming methods, makes Zaytoun’s Palestinian olive oil a world outstanding product.

Zaytoun’s olive oil and olives are premium quality, grown and harvested using traditional farming methods, free of pesticides. The olives are handpicked and the oil extracted within 24 hours, then carefully stored. Some of the olive oil and olives are now certified by EU bodies as organic.

Zaytoun is also delighted that some of the olive harvest is now designated Fairtrade – producing the world’s first-ever olive oil and olives! This is the result of many years of work by the farming cooperatives and the Palestinian organizations that have been supporting them.

We look forward to working with other producer cooperatives to further Fairtrade and organic certification for dates, almonds, couscous, za’atar and soap.

To further guarantee the quality & regular supply of olive oil Zaytoun imports from Palestine, Zaytoun have worked with NGO’s and Co-operatives to put in place the infrastructure and training programs necessary.

At present, we have introduced the following Zaytoun Fair Trade Palestinian products to the South African market:
o Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (500ml & 250ml)
o Medjoul Dates (250g, 500g, 1 kg and 5kg)
o Za’ atar Spice mix (80g)
o Nabali Green Olives (200g)

We look forward to expanding our variety to include almonds, tree-ripened black olives, sundried tomatoes, Maftoul (Palestinian cous cous) and olive oil soap in the future.

Zaytoun’s extra-virgin olive oil is sourced from a number of different farming cooperatives in Palestine who harvest their trees by hand every October and send the olives to village presses within 24 hours. The produce is collected and bottled by organizations committed to farmer support and the principles of fair trade.
It is free of pesticides and harvested by hand. Pressed from the fruit of ancient trees which have been tended by hand through generations of family farmers.

Zaytoun’s Extra-Virgin olive oil is available in the following sizes:
• 500ml
• 250ml

The ‘Medjoul’ is the finest of dates. It is grown in the Jericho area which has the perfect climate for producing these delicious, soft and succulent dates.
They are sourced through the ‘Palm Farmers Cooperative’ and are a vital source of income in this area which is seeing vast tracts of land illegally confiscated by Israel.

Zaytoun’s Medjoul dates are available in the following sizes:

• 250g packet
• 500g Gift Box
• 1kg Gift Box
• 5g Bulk Box

Zaytoun’s organic Fairtrade green olives are pickled in traditional Palestinian fashion with olive oil, water and salt. The olives are a world-first Fairtrade product.

They are produced by farming cooperatives within the Palestinian Fairtrade Association who harvest their trees by hand every October.

Zaytoun’s organic Fairtrade pickled green olives are available in the following sizes:
• 200g

Za’atar is an everyday staple in the Middle East; a herb mix of wild thyme, toasted sesame and sumac.
It is a zesty seasoning, delicious with olive oil on fresh bread, on tomato salads or rubbed into chicken before roasting… but be warned, its fresh taste is addictive!

Zaytoun’s za’atar is sourced from a women’s cooperative in Jenin, wild-harvested.

Zaytoun’s za’atar is available in the following sizes:
• 80g jars
